Video Game History Generation 5

This generation is know as the 32 or 64 bit generation.  It is also known as the 3D generation.

Generation 5 occurred in the mid 90’s with several consoles released.  The most successful being the Sony Play Station.

Consoles were powerful enough the do true 3D effects, such as, shadows, shading, and texturing.

Other highlights are:

  • CD-ROMs replace cartridge
  • move from 2D to 3D graphics
  • the emergence of Sony as the leader in consoles
  • Nintendo held on to the handheld market with the release of Game Boy Color.
